The quinceanera is the 15th birthday. The occasion is celebrated throughout Latin America and Hispanic communities in the United States. It marks, for young Hispanic women, the transition from girlhood to womanhood. The festivities include a church service and a party that is a cross between a Sweet 16 and a debutante ball. The term quinceanera refers to both the young lady being celebrated and the event. It comes from the Spanish words for 15, "quince," and years, "anos."
Like so many coming-of-age rituals celebrated in the United States such as the Jewish bar mitzvah or the Roman Catholic confirmation, the quinceanera has at times been branded materialistic. Too much party, not enough coming of age. |
